Domingo out of the band!-- Keyboardplayer Domingo is no longer part of the Ancient Rites cult. A replacement has already been found and the first gig with him went really great. This is what Gunther & Rites had to say about the events: "Recently ANCIENT RITES had to take the painful step to fire keyboardplayer Domingo Smets. This unanimous decision was strictly professional as on a personal level the man shall be missed. Main goal however is to offer the same quality in live situations as on studio recordings which requires full dedication and high technical skill. The band felt both qualities were lacking as far as Domingo's work was concerned. Keyboards play a much more important part in the sound of A.R. today and are of a much higher technical level. Also the complex piano parts of A.R. producer Oliver Philips must be performed live in a professional way. Replacement is Davy Wouters, known from live gigs with DANSE MACABRE and the Flemish Gothic Doom band OBLIVION." Furthermore, the concert-page has been updated with new tourdates! Also, get your cyberass to www.metal-rules.com because there you can (temporarly!) leech the Ancient Rites videoclip of "Victory or Valhalla"! Later on we will store this 50 Mb baby in the cave here for future downloads. Also expect the new DANSE MACABRE website within two weeks! |

video cdr finally released!-- It has taken us 1,5 years (of promissing you people!) to produce this beauty but finally it is on the shelves ready to be shipped to YOU!...The Ancient Rites Video CDR!!! For the ones who've been living on another planet or just have been dropdead drunk the last 1,5 years: this is not an official release but a small-priced fanrelease for the Ancient Horde following only - it's however completely arranged in cooperation with the bandmembers themselves. "Scenes of Splendour", as the CDR is called, contains more than 50 minutes of .mpeg files which you can play on your pc. Hell, it even looks great on a 21" screen! For more info on the clips themselves and to order it, click here now!!!! More site-updates (the promised pictures etc...) are coming soon! |

ancient rites hits the charts!-- If you think we were talking shit when we said that DIM CARCOSA is a killing nutcracker, go figure this: a few weeks ago the album entered the official Dutch indie chart at the 9th place!!!! Ancient Rites was the highest newcomer at that time, defying big alternative acts like Spearhead, Orbital, Autechre, Pennywise, Echo & The Bunnymen etc..., and being in the presence of megaselling artists such as Weezer, Thindersticks and Bran van 3000. Now, this is what I call a ballbreaking breakthrough!!! new shirts available!-- Again, the merchandise-section has been updated. This time there are two new shirts available with the new Dim Carcosa design. Check it out! We're also finalizing the huge pictorial (ca 120 great pictures!) of the Ancient Rites minitour in Finland last year. Expect it online next weekend. video, gigging & other gossip!-- The guys have recorded a professional videoclip and according to all sources, the result is just great! It will be shown on various tv-shows and channels such as TMF, 666 Sekunttia, Jyrki, etc... Later on it will be made available to the fans and I mightl try to get it online right here. -- There has also been quite some gigging for Ancient Rites lately:first there was the amazing Belgian releaseparty: an o.k. sound and a fucking tight playing made this to a memorable gig! In a live-environment, the new songs sound very much like what you can hear on the cd itself, if there's a good sound availble that is. Other important gigs were the Graspop festival (not too good sound, but an enthousiastic and big audience) and ofcourse the first Ancient Rites gig outside of Europe: the show in Israel!!! The crowd (ca 900 people!) went completely ballistic overthere and according to the ever-loyal Wim Neefs (a.k.a. Eroll:-), who travelled along with the band to Tel Aviv, this was the most insane audience he has ever seen. He also shot alot of pics for an online pictorial, so you can expect that here within one of these weeks. ancient ringtones:-)!-- As a little and silly yet funny present to the loyal Ancient Rites fan, Jan-Örkki made some ringtones for your GSM (Nokia 3210, 3310, 3330 with the composer ofcourse). Have fun with it, pump up your volume and irritate everybody!!!:-) 1. dim carcosa breaks all records!-- On top of the aforementioned results, the reviews which appear in the press are stunning!!! The album has made it to album of the month in several soundcheck's of big magazines (e.g. album of the month is Metal Hammer Israel!) and journalists get our their maximum scores! There hasn't been one bad or even mediocre rated review written!!! Even the biggest mainstream music magazine of Holland, OOR, has written a raving review about the new album. Here's a quote from them: "...Dim Carcosa is without doubt the most important document to date in Belgium's history of metal!" We couldn't have said it better ourselves! It's just all over-the-top, but this only proves that DIM CARCOSA is a plain killer album for a wide audience. We are gathering all the rates and reviews, so expect them online soon. buy dim carcosa cheaply online!-- We've updated the merchandise-section with the DigiPack and regular CD-version of DIM CARCOSA. You can order it online through the online shop Proxis which really have some amazing SHARP PRICES for you! Even if you live in Brasil or the Cayman Islands, it will cost you less than a regular cdshop! We've used this shop ourselves several times before and it rox! So, just click the link in the merchandise-section and get DIM CARCOSA soon & cheap! updates, danse macabre & other!-- Finally, the contact- and discography-section have gotten some refreshment. The discography is not yet fully functional though, information about the older releases will be online shortly (yes really!). Also schedualed is the long awaited Finish tour report, over a 100 new pictures, a forum and some other shit! By the way: DANSE MACABRE, the wave project of Jan and Gunther, has finalized its recordings and will release the album pretty soon through Well of Urd, the sublabel of Hammerheart. Also please note that the Twiske & Shout festival has had some internal conflict and thus the metalstage has moved to Sunday June, 17th at Tagrijn in Hilversum (NL). Ancient Rites will still headline and other bands are Destroyer 666 (AU), Nifelheim (SE) and Severe Torture (NL). This will be the official Dutch cd-presentation. It's a beauty, isn't it?! The album will be released on a limited Digipack, a vinyl version and a normal CD. The press reactions so far are completely amazing!!! In Aardschok, the biggest Dutch metal magazine, they will receive 95/100, in Mindview (the biggest Belgian mag) they will get the topscore! Here's a little quote from the online webzine Martelgang: "(...)This is the perfect mix of heavy metal, black metal and a medieval atmosphere. Time after time I'm stunned! (...) If this isn't the big breakthrough then metalminded Europe has some serious shit in their ears!". Just to give you an impression. As soon as other reviews will arrive, we'll put them online in the press-gallery! Now, concerning livegigs we refreshed the concerts-section with some new dates! Check it out. Please note that the official releaseparty will be held in Biebob on June 16th!!! Be there!!! They also appear on the Graspop festival on Friday sharing the stage with Destruction, Rose Tatoo, Metallium and Devin Townsend. mp3 samples online!-- Yes! Today is Easter! Couldn't we have chosen a better time to unleash two MP3 fragments of the new album, DIM CARCOSA?! Jesus Christ left his grave! If he would have had an mp3 player, you know why!!!! Anyway, the two mp3's are fragments of Victory or Valhalla (Last Man Standing) & ...And the Horns Called For War. Click the link for an instant download. It was a pain in the ass (don't we just love that!) to chose the songs to be sampled. It's like chopping a book's chapter in half! So please be aware that these fragments are just a little teaser and are only a small part of the entity called DIM CARCOSA. Don't judge the album by these fragments,.... it only get's better!!! (And of course, don't play on shitty pcspeakers - though they would even sound killer on a telephone haha!) Also, we encourage you to write down some impressions in the guestbook - would be much appreciated! The first reactions from the press on DIM CARCOSA are simply amazing. Topscore's are going to be given in major magazines, big promoter's are contacting the band etc. So you could say the rock is starting to roll! The band is now preparing the live-set in their rehearsalplace (see picture on the right) and the new songs turn out to be killer in a live-environnement. Ancient Rites might play some festivals, but negociations are still taking place. For sure is that they will do a headline-tour in this year's Autumn. Ofcourse, a severe site update is schedualed as well. Don't forget.... release date for the new album: May, 28th ! |

new album!-- Hordes of the horns, wake up!!! A new era is about to begin! After being in the studio non-stop for six weeks, Ancient Rites finishes the mixing of the new album called DIM CARCOSA, this very day! One week ago we payed a visit to the studio and now we've put an extensive studioreport online: extremely exclusive information for your eyes only! Jump to it by clicking on the picture on the right. DIM CARCOSA will be released by the end of May on Hammerheart records, but hopefully we'll delight you with some mp3 exerpts ASAP. They also might appear on the Dynamo and Graspop festival and a live video/DVD release is another vicious plan of Hammerheart! Finally, we are also going to fresh up this NetCave gradually: still holding on to the very same essence since I created it in '96, but some major updates have to be done! Coming soon are about 100 new pictures (ranging from the early days till now) and a complete pictorial of their Finnish tour a few months ago! Keep on coming back! |

The beast called Ancient Rites is awake from its summersleep! For starters, the amount of gigs that are already booked for the rest of 2000 is growing every week! Already it includes a complete tour in the land of a thousand lakes, Suomi Finland - and also three dates in Colombia are on the AR route! Check the exact dates here. Also the writing of new songs is now at full speed, 3 songs are already entirely completed! No titels are known yet, but the rumour goes that the albumtitle will be "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours". But then again .... should we believe rumours?! |

Some new artillery has arrived! We've got the merchandise section up and running: check it out, it's located at the specials section. At the moment all the shirts are online (including the new and utterly cool camouflage-designs!) and later we'll add the complete cd-backcatalogue which will you be able to order online (at the moment the online ordering is situated under the "discography" section). But especially the demo-tape will be made available again, so stay tuned! Also schedualed: a huge update of the photogallery, an extensive new biography and much more!
Concerning a new album we can tell you that the guys are in the process of creating their 4th masterpiece: already 3 songs are more or less written! In between all the AR-work Gunther has formed an Oi! band called Lion's Pride! Jan on the other hand will travel back to Finland for a few weeks to record some songs for SinMasters, another project of him with the vocalist of Two Witches. Check out http://www.actcom.fi for more info! About the the Video-Cd: it will definitely be released around November/December this year. |
16 April 2000 |
Finally! Some new action in the WebCave! The reason for the late update is pretty positive though: your loyal A.R. WebWizard is currently working on a professional VIDEO-CD with almost 50 min's of UNRELEASED VIDEOMATERIAL in the great MPEG format which even allows full-screen viewing without shocks and in good quality! The material contains 9 tracks from the NEVER RELEASED professional live-video "Ancient Rites descending into Darkness",
recorded in Germany '94 and directed by the famous MATT VAIN (cfr. Mayhem-live video)! This is fucking great stuff as the video is shot with many different camera's and the sound is excellent! The VIDEO-CD will also include other, newer live-clips with the latest line-up, plus the complete feature of a professional TV-station about A.R. on the DYNAMO-festival. The packaging will be absolutely stunning and most of all: the price will be lower than a regular cd!!!
This is definitely a must-have for every fan of Ancient Rites, the only thing you need is a computer (Pentium 90 or higher) and a cdrom player. As a preview to the VIDEO-CD you can download a 42 second sample by clicking Gunther's evil face on the right. The size is big (7,2 Mb!), but that should be no problem for users of cable-modem's etc... Don't forget to use the right button on your mouse and choose "Save as...", or you will get the MPEG in streaming shit. The VIDEO-CD will be released in autumn 2000, more info you'll find right here... As for now... enjoy the sample! The sample has a small error in it, don't bother about it, it's just a Betatest and this problem is solved on the CDROM version. |

The rerelease of the "Dark Ritual" demo on 10" picture-disc is finally out! Get it as soon as you can, because it's limited to a 1000 copies. Mail to Laurent from Painkiller Records for more information and orders! We have put the song "From Beyond The Grave" online in .MP3 format, check it out. As you might know, this song is from the very same demo, and can also be found on the compilation. Enjoy! As promised we have started to compile a list with all previous Ancient Rites gigs. View it at the concerts-section. At the moment it goes back to somewhere in '97, so there are still 7 years to be covered. A very intensive job indeed! If you think you can help, then mail as fast as a devil! |
17 November 1999 |
A new milestone for this WebCave has just been created! We now offer you the possibility to order each Ancient Rites CD online at really normal prices! We do this in association with a large Belgian onlineshop, so everything goes fast, save and easy! Prices are 14$ for a normal cd, 9$ for the just released compilation album and 30$ for the limited Japanese Import version of 'Fatherland', which is already a genuine collecters-item. BUT! On top of those sharp prices, Proxis offers you a 5$ (!!!) discount on the first cd you buy! Amazing hu! That's why we thought it would be great to add this facility to the A.R. WebCave, and ofcourse: people living in Pakistan are now also able to buy Ancient Rites cd's from behind their PC! Hail to technology I'd say! Find it all in the discography-section, right here! |
7 November 1999 |
Greetings! Here are some updates for you! First of all, we've added the compilation-album to the discography-section. By the way, because lack of space on the cd, the album does not contain a cd-rom part as announced earlier. Also, we've added an extra button in the mainmenu: concerts! This section contains all the forthcomming concerts. Later, all the previous gigs in the band's career will be listed! But as everybody knows, compiling such a list which will go back like almost 10 years, is a hard job, but we'll get there, stay tuned. Also, hold on tight, 'cause we are planning to redesign the pictures-section and add hundreds (!) of old and new pic's. Gunther recently stated that the guys are working on new material, so we could expect an album in 2000! Raise your beers! |
22 September 1999 |
Applause! The Ancient Rites CaveWizard is finally out of his well-deserved Summer-sleep, and we immediately offer you a whole bunch of new things.
The hottest news is probably the fact that the guys will release a compilation album in order to celebrate their 10th anniversary. If everything goes ok this musical treasure will see daylight somewhere in October. It will contain songs selected from all albums and one song from the highly acclaimed 'Dark Ritual' demo. The booklet will contain a text written by Gunther and a lot of cool pictures, but what's even more: it will contain a cd-rom part with also stack of photo's. A perfect overlook at their career so far, I'd say. And ofcourse a perfect opportunity to the few aliens out there to get to know Ancient Rites for the first time... A long time ago we promised a special about the big Summer-festivals that have been honoured with the presence of A.R., and so finally it is here in the specials-section. As with everything on this site, it will be under permanent evoluation as we will receive more pictures and more pressreviews etc... As for now, there are about 45 pictures from both the Dynamo and Graspop festival. More to come! Upcomming gigs:

Finally we have some awesome old pictures on board! A big thanks to Wim Neefs, he has provided us with a bunch of quality pictures from the period 1992-1994, with the "Gunther-Bart-Walter"-line up. We've added them to the gallery, but to make it kinda logical we've added them in the first page of the gallery. Yesyes, one day every picture will be chronical:)
In the meantime, everybody is anxious to see the guys on the mainstage of the biggest open-air metalfest in Belgium: Graspop, which will be held this weekend. Despite their short setlist (30 minutes), we're sure some serious ass is about to be kicked! Be there! |
5 June 1999 |
We've added some more pic's from the tour with Deicide to the visual gallery, plus some other old pictures.
We are working on a Dynamo-special which will include tons of pics, reviews and other impressions about the Ancient Rites madness at Dynamo.
Soon Painkiller Records will rerelease the Dark Ritual demo on 10" vinyl as said before. Click on the image on the right for an -exclusive- peep at the killer artwork of this picture disc. The front is an old drawing from Gunther and on the back there's a nice picture of the early Ancient Rites in full 80's metal-glory! More info & orders: Painkiller Website |

"Veni Vidi Vici!".... Caesar would have said it again if he would have been at Dynamo! But now it was the Ancient Rites battalion which came and conquered the Dynamo audience... The crowd went nuts and severe cases of goosebumps were reported;). This is what Gunther says about the musical massacre:
"Playing at Dynamo Open Air truly was a fantastic experience. Never expectedthe people to participate that fanatically. First time in our career Inoticed hands in the air as far as I could see, (it is more common that onlythe first rows really go wild). Thousands of hands clapping to our medievalfolk parts and thousands of banging heads to our Metal mayhem was abrilliant sight. A big cheers to the crowd because they seemed to know the lyrics better than I did! A crew from a TV station (R.O.B. TV) made a special of "A.R. ON DYNAMO" that will be broadcasted in a couple of weeks.DYNAMO also was a good opportunity to meet many people (new and old friends)from all over the world. A day not to forget!" Everybody with their hands in the air! This, dear friends, must have been a problem for the few brave men visiting the toilets while AR played! haha:)
17 May 1999 |
This weekend Ancient Rites will perform at the famous Dynamo Open Air festival, but they are also added to the bill of the Belgian Graspop festival! Moreover, they will play on the mainstage! Other acts are Motörhead, (the baby-oiled muscle guys of) Manowar, Mercyful Fate, Cradle Of Filth, Hypocrisy, Danzig etc. This festival is the biggest open-air metalfest in Belgium and draws over 30.000 metalheads on one day. Be there on the 27th of June! Gunther has also discovered a beautiful 20th century piece of technology called e-mail! You can contact him at: gunther@ancientrites.be ... Another important fact is that Painkiller Records will re-release the 'Dark Ritual'-demo on a 12" picture disc! Be quick, because it will be limited to a 1000 copys. More info on their website. |

27 March 1999 |

As promised, we exclusively offer you a very interesting and immensely long in-depth interview with guitarist Jan -Örkki- Yrlund. As most of you know, Jan has been into other known bands such as Finnish thrashers Prestige and Swiss gothrockers Lacrimosa and is generally into music for over 15 years now. So we had a lot to ask, and he had a lot to tell... Crack up a beer and check the interview now by clicking on the icon on the right, or go to the Press-gallery. Everything you wanted to know about his past, present and future is all in there... |
13 March 1999 |
Below is an updated schedule of all forthcomming A.R. shows. As you can see, there will be two in Spain, one in Portugal and two in Columbia!!! As said before, the Deicide tour was very successful: almost all venues were sold out! After the summer, Ancient Rites will do a headline tour! Another great novelty: at their gig on the Dynamo festival they will shoot a video! We also did a mega-interview with guitarist Jan -Örkki- Yrlund which will appear on this site as soon as possible! Be prepared!

20 February 1999 |

While the guys are still on the road with the Deicide-tour, the first pictures of that tour have arrived! Also some older pictures have been added in the gallery. A special thanks goes to Rheigohr and Ehrialch for their great pics! The tour seems to be going very good! Already after their third gig, all Ancient Rites-shirts were sold out. Concerning future gigs, there has been talk of a Colombian tour, hopefully an official confirmation will follow soon! |
29 January 1999 |
Last month there were some rumours, but now we have full official confirmation!! Ancient Rites will play on the renowned Dynamo Open Air Festival in Holland!!!!
The exact date and time we shall reveal soon, but the festival is held on 21, 22 & 23 May 1999. Well well, on the band's 10th anniversary, they finally made it to the most famous metalfestival in the world! Blame it on their never-ending persistence and musical tenacity! Another great thing has happened! "Fatherland" is released in Japan!!! It contains two bonustracks ("Fallen Angel" and "From Beyond The Grave", both from the demo!), a sticker and all lyrics are in Japanese! This Japanese release is accomplished by Toy's Factory. Yesterday, 28 January, there was a "documentary" about black metal on Belgian national television RTBF (French spoken part of Belgium), which ofcourse featured Ancient Rites a lot. They showed quite some Ancient Rites live shots and they interviewed Gunther who had to explain once again that they weren't a political band of any kind... -Sigh-! |
28 January 1999 |
Ancient Rites is going to do a lot of shows soon! Here's a summary of the forthcomming gigs:
13 January 1999 |
There are some changes in the schedule of the European tour: The show in Paris has been cancelled and the show in Holland (12 Feb) is now in Zaandam ("De Kade") instead of Hardenberg.
There are also negotiations with the organizers of a Portuguese Festival (24.04). Stay tuned for a possible confirmation! |
5 December 1998 |
A new album, a new European tour!!! Hell yeah, Ancient Rites will play all around Mother Europe as the direct opener for, again, Deicide! Support Acts are the mighty Rotting Christ, Behemoth and Aeturnus! What a killer line-up, hu!! Below you can find the exact tourdates, filled up with other gigs. Notice the big Open Air Festival (ca. 25.000 people) in June where Ancient Rites will headline the metalday. Anyway, don't miss the chance to see Ancient Rites when they are in your country for they will gently blast your brains out!
3 November 1998 |
We've closed down the competition last weekend. It has been a success! We got more entries than we ever expected. Thanks a lot to all who entered the competition... The winners are already informed and can be seen here. If you're not one of them (and because of the many entries, there are a lot): wipe your tears and buy the album!:) |
25 October 1998 |
We have translated some more reviews of the new album and putted them online in the reviews section. Also keep in mind that this is the last week of the competition (more information you can find below)! The inflow so far is quite gigantic, but still you can give it a go if you haven't done so yet... |
11 October 1998 |
If you still haven't got a copy of Fatherland, you might wanna test your luck and enter the Ancient Rites contest and receive a free CD or one of those great Ancient Rites glossy posters! Just check the above link for more information... We also installed a new realtime guestbook where you can leave your public appreciations, hatemails or whatever... Please sign it! Finally we have also added the first Fatherland reviews to that press-section and updated the discography section with the Fatherland information (lyrics will follow). The guys will also go on an European tour soon, hold on for more information! In the meantime, here are some other dates:
15 September 1998 |
Now the album is already out for half a month, the first reactions from both the press and the public are really stunning, to say the least! For instance, Fatherland even made it to "CD of the Month" at the big glossy mag Terrorizer and blew away all competition!!! These pile of reviews and interviews we will process and we shall put them online as soon as they reach us, so stay tuned! In the mean time, we have updated the history-section with the new biography and we've added a couple of more live pics at the photogallery... |
13 August 1998 |
The Madness continues! Here's the second preview from the upcomming album as we have promised you. It's the titletrack Fatherland , a hymn for those who never forget the roots of their country... To shorten the downloadtime we have edited the original song by gently cutting off the in- and outro, but the essence is still the same..."Always turn to my Fatherland!"
Apart from the Flemish CD presentation on the 22nd of August in Diest, there will be a Dutch one too at the Baroeg in Rotterdam. The exact date is not yet unveiled, but stay tuned for that. |
10 August 1998 |
"...Legions march to storm the gates of Heaven..." Indeed...the newest Ancient Rites hymn is ready to be unleashed upon the mortal world! The official releasedate of FATHERLAND is set at 28 August, but of course we now already offer you the chance to have a quick taste of its beauty! We kick off the digital orgy by exposing you to the first soundsample: Mother Europe (mp3)... A track dedicated to the splendour of European history. Please don't hesitate to let us know your reactions. Watch out for more in the next days! |
20 June 1998 |

Here's the first series of some cool pictures taken at the European tour they just did with Deicide, Naglfar, Brutal Truth and Amon Amarth !
Also we want to stress that this NetCave is built to be expierenced with the great technology of Netscape Navigator (available on both Pc and Mac platforms), any other browser (especially Microsoft Internet Exploder) messes up the lay-out and does not reflect on how we intended this NetCave to be! |

On the 10th of May, Ancient Rites did another gig here in Vlaanderen (as the support-act of Morbid Angel)...this wasthe first show with the new keyboardplayer... We will put some pictures of this gig online ASAP. Also expect more informationon the forthcoming 'Fatherland' album, which is set to be released one of these months. It's produced by the guys of theprogressive metal band Everon and that's the guarantee to a killerproduction! Also Mikka Luttinen from Finnish Impaled Nazerenewill appear on the album. To be more precise, he's doing some extreme vocals on the newest and (third) version of 'Fallen Angel', originally a song from their'Dark Ritual' demo and which already appeared on 'Blasfemia Eternal' as the outro. Gunther said in a magazine: "Nowadays a lot of people are covering bands from the 80's, well we covered ourselves, haha!". It's going to be very active months for Ancient Rites so keep checking this page and don't forget to visit the darkwave/gothic project of Gunther and Jan, called Danse Macabre ... |

Hell yeah! You are looking on the complete updated & rebuilt Ancient Rites NetCave! Not only the graphical part is redone, also the content has been refreshed. But because it are busy times for both Ancient Rites and for me, there are still a few sections pretty empty, such as the 'specials'-page. But don't panic, this time the NetCave will be updated very frequently!! No delays anymore! So, I hope you folks like this new layout, and if you feel like it, let us know your opinion and tips...here... Tnx! |
