Wings Of Death (The Netherlands)

Ancient Rites is:
Gunther Theys – Vocals
Erik Sprooten – Guitars
Walter Van Cortenberg – Drums
Domingo Smets – Guitars

Laguz

Lords of Metal (The Netherlands)

Metal Reviews

It seems like an eternity since Ancient Rites unleashed Dim Carcosa. Though I initially found it moderately enjoyable, Dim Carcosa eventually grew on me to the point of being one of my favorites CD’s; and something I still listen to on a regular basis. Though an excellent live CD/DVD was released a few years back I’ve been craving new material from Ancient Rites for quite some time. To say I had high expectations would be correct. Ancient Rites seem to evolve with every release: originally starting as more of a traditional Black Metal outfit, and slowly growing into an epic combination of Black, Power, and Viking/Folk Metal, Ancient Rites had me a little worried. Would they continue to evolve to the point of differentiating itself from the Dim Carcosa sound too much?

Rubicon starts out with an intro called Crusade. The original intro, The Return, from Dim Carcosa was excellent. Though Crusade isn’t as good it rewards the listener with a short lived, but effective refrain from The Return on top of middle-eastern influences. Middle-eastern sounds is something we didn’t hear in Dim Carcosa and is a common element throughout the CD as many songs deal with European history involving wars with Persian armies; so it only makes sense. This time there are no songs about Vikings and this further reflects a slight change in the keyboard melodies and folk elements. The majority of the lyrical focus involves wars ranging from World War 1 (Ypres) to a battle between Germanic armies that decimated multiple Roman legions in the song Cheruscan. Other lyrical highlights include the song Invictus which uses the original poem by William Ernest Henley as a basis for all the lyrics aside from a couple of gang chants of “Invictus” thrown in for good measure. But more on the lyrics later… what about the music!?!

After Crusade the first real song is a beast of middle-eastern riffing, epic synth, and fist-pumping energy. It’s called Templar and is possibly one of the best songs on the CD. It sets a great tone for the CD and introduces us to how Ancient Rights have evolved. I’ve already mentioned the change from Folk and Viking Metal keys to a more middle-eastern flavoured, epic battle synth (think Bal-Sagoth). On top of that is a change vocally. Gone are the Black Metal raspy styling of Gunther Theys and its place is a deeper, more sinister style that is half-Death Metal, half-spoken word. Originally I was a little skeptical of this but it did grow on me after the 2nd listen. It does work well and sometimes becomes more raspy, but part of me does miss the old style. The clean vocals are used perhaps slightly more and sound mostly the same. For those who don’t know Theys has a very unique clean style that I can’t even really describe and is better heard. To emphasize the clean vocals more this time around the band has incorporated more back-up gang vocals to accentuate vocal lines (mostly choruses but also some verses). This is done with both the clean and harsher style. Do not think this is HammerFall style sing-along gang vocals. It’s more like group chants from an army before they go into battle. Though most choruses are simple (usually just one or two words, with few songs being exceptions) they are made very effective by intricate verses and extra-epic everything musically behind the choruses.

Guitar-wise the styles ranged from the bands traditional Black Metal roots to slightly more melodic Power Metal riffs. Middle-eastern riffs and leads are sprinkled throughout the CD as well to compliment the keys and sporadic but effective traditional melodic leads make regular appearances. This time around there is also more power-chord triplet chugging which is milked for maximum head banging. I would say overall the music is more melodic than has been in the past but for some reason the music also seems more aggressive. This is due in part to regular but short-lived blast beats in many songs along with fast double bass and galloping rhythms. All tempos are switched often, normally going from fast to even faster, but the band, as they have always done, have incorporated some quiet, atmospheric breaks. These breaks are a nice change of pace from the aggressiveness of the rest of the music and usually have a nice build-up back to the Metal which makes them all the more effective.

One thing that prevented me from getting into Dim Carcosa right away was an overly electronic drum sound. This was perhaps due to drum triggers used in the studio which did a poor job of sounding like a natural drum sound; but it provided an unnecessary contrast to the traditional and folk elements of the band. Though the actual drumming was excellent it took me awhile to get over the sound of the drums. Eventually I got used to it but for those of you who never really got over it the drum sound it is back to normal. It blends in nicely with the rest of the music and doesn’t have the overtly electronic sound of Dim Carcosa. This allows the music to give the listener a strong sense of cohesion with all musical elements working together to create an epic and triumphant sound… without any one instrument, even vocally, taking center stage over something else.

Rubicon sees the band continuing the tradition of lyrics based on European history but also furthering itself away from their Black Metal roots. Sure enough there are still Black Metal riffs and Black Metal drumming, but it’s toned down from Dim Carcosa. Ancient Rites seem to be leaning more towards an extreme-epic form of Metal that is perhaps similar to Bal-Sagoth in spirit, but different in overall execution (not as over-the-top, and a very different approach to the vocals to name a few things separating the two). I wouldn’t be surprised if in another 2 or 3 releases down the road the music is almost completely devoid of anything Black Metal. Either way, what we have right now is an excellent successor to Dim Carcosa which builds on that CD but retains enough of what made that release great. Now, if you completely disagree with me and think that Dim Carcosa sucked or wasn’t anything special, then you’ll probably disagree with me on this one as well. Otherwise I can say that it was worth the wait for this release from my perspective. The only downside I could find on repeated listens was a few repetitive rhythms found throughout the choruses of the middle of the track listing and that was about it. As it stands right now this stands as one of my top picks for this year so far and it continues to get better with each listen.

Zenéjük is magasan az átlag felett áll, igazi különlegességüket mégis a történelmi ihletettségu szövegeik jelentik, amelyeket a rendkívül tehetséges, osi kultúrák terén egyedülálló tudással rendelkezo zenekarvezeto, Gunther Theys jegyez. Hail to Ancient Hordes - Our Kingdom will Come!

Metal Temple

The quest of those who claim that Belgium exports more than chocolate is over. This Belgian band must be mentioned in every tourist guide of the country. Ancient Rites created a black piece of metal called Rubicon that contains the wrath of ancient battle heroes and they have just thrown it onto their fans in an explosive manner! It has been five years since Ancient Rites last released an album. Back then it was Dim Carcosa that came to demonstrate the band's ability to create powerful, inspired melodic black metal music and indeed their work had been much praised to date. Five years however is still a long pause and many wondered how the Belgian band would come back. Well they could not have chosen a more emphatic way to do so. Rubicon was definitely worth the wait as well as the various changes that Ancient Rites underwent. Gunther Theys who gave up the bass to the band's ex-keyboardist Domingo Smets to concentrate on vocals, managed to bring back two former members, Bart Vandereycken (guitar) in the place of Jan Yrlund and Raf Jansen (also guitarist), bringing the total number of band members to seven! The end result is perfect. The sound is technically superior to their last album and with the professional touch in production by Oliver Phillips and Christian Moos, Rubicon is a masterpiece. The album itself retains the epic atmosphere that characterises Ancient Rites. There are many great riffs and the choruses are strong and will immediately catch on you from the first spin. The tracks that stand out are Thermopylae and Ypres. With the intro of Thermopylae you can just put yourself within the 300 Spartan heroes of history, ready to unleash hell at commander Leonidas', order! In Ypres, we find the contribution of female vocalist Rute Fevereiro that bonds quite well with Gunther's grunts. Apart from the successful transitions from epic martial parts to melancholic interludes, another thing that I noticed after the first couple of sessions is the way in which the order of the tracks has been chosen. The linkage between them is great and makes the whole album more rigid, both in terms of sound and story. Rubicon is an album that will do for Ancient Rites's next one, what its predecessor, Dim Carcosa, did for it; set the standards very high!

Let the horns call the war...

Victory or Valhalla!

Vampire Magazine (The Netherlands)

One of the icons of the Belgian Metal scene is Ancient RitesIn 2003 the band celebrates their 15th anniversary and what better way to do it than with a live album. And The Hordes Stood As One was recorded in June of 2002 when they played a show at the Biebob venue in Vosselaar, and that show is now released by Hammerheart Records.
When I first heard Dim Carcosa from 2001 it blew me away, and I still think it's a very good release, with fantastic keyboard work. I was very happy to see that quite a few of the tracks from that album made it to And The Hordes Stood As One: In fact, only three out of eleven tracks didn't make it. That makes half of the live material from the latest album, with the other half of the songs coming from the numerous previous recordings. The band has changed their musical direction quite a bit over the years, so the older songs like Evil Prevails, Total Misanthropia and (Het Verdronken Land Van) Saeftinge are put in a relative new jacket, mostly because the vocals of main man Gunther Theys have changed with the musical direction. The band does the older tracks absolutely no harm however, and they fit perfectly in a set with the material from the later albums Fatherland and Dim Carcosa. In case the music of Ancient Rites is unfamiliar to you, they used to play Black Metal, but over the years enriched it with a subtle mix of melody, atmosphere and a dash of folk (European/ Belgian folklore). The three most important things of a live album are sound, set list and the playing of the band. When I go to see a band live I always hope they play my favourite tracks, and for this record I can say that the band has succeeded in selecting in what I consider to be be some of their best work. They took tracks from every full length album, but understandably focused on the last album. With so many tracks the buyer gets more than worth for the money, because And The Hordes Stood As One is almost 80 minutes in length. There is minimal talking in between the songs, and the present people in the venue fill those short gaps with their constant cheering and singing. What's nice about this record is that the production is so incredibly good that you can always hear the audience enjoying the show, without taking anything away from the band sound. If I would be very picky I could say that the second guitar sometimes sounds a fraction too soft, but 99% of the album has an absolutely brilliant production. Oh, and I hope you weren't thinking that a band that has existed for 15 years can't play a decent show!
Sixteen tracks, 80 minutes, and a fantastic production... What more could you want from a live album? And The Hordes Stood As One is the perfect addition to your Ancient Rites collection, a perfect way to check out this killer band... A virtually perfect live album!

Voices from the Darkside (Germany)

Apart from their very early material I was never quite a big fan of Belgium's Ancient Rites and therefore didn't really follow their career over the last couple of years anymore. Of course I noticed that they constantly continued to release records, but wasn't too eager to check them out, to be perfectly honest here. On the other hand it seems that there's a bunch of kids around with an even more extreme attitude, cause the track Total Misanthropia gets introduced by mainman Gunther Theys with the words: "Many people hate us... we don't care!!" Well, I gotta admit that I personally at least have a lot of respect for what they achieved over the years and for being around so long by now. And this live record furthermore certainly is a very good proof of their obvious live qualities - Ancient Rites have matured into a very unique act, that has excellent musicians in their ranks (just listen to the incredible guitar work!). Musically they don't really fit into any category anymore (which they actually never really did, not even in their 'Black Metal' days) - they just deliver great music with an overall middle age feel to it. Of course it's still Metal, but very unique and not comparable to anything else I've heard lately. The location for the recordings of this impressively packaged first official live album couldn't have been choosen any better, cause the crowd at the Biebob club in Vosselaar, Belgium totally worships Ancient Rites and creates an exciting atmosphere throughout the entire 16 songs set. Maybe the fact that I personally never saw them live had something to do with my lack of enthusiasm concerning their material. On record it often bored me, but these live versions partly even managed to send shivers down my spine! Really impressive! Can't tell you whether or not all their classics are included in the setlist, but judging it just by the crowd response I suppose most of them must be. So, of course any Ancient Rites supporter will certainly buy this right away, but I suggest the rest of you to give this disc a listen as well. In my case it helped changing my view on the band around... Good one!

Dim Carcosa

Als Beweis hierfür könnte man eigentlich jeden Song nennen, aber besonders empfehlenswert sind wohl Victory or Valhalla (Last man standing), ...And the Horns Called for War und das in deutsch vorgetragene Stück Götterdämmerung.
Tipp!!

The Metal Observer (Germany)

Embers (The Netherlands)

The Belgian Pride has returned. For some reason a great many people always considered Ancient Rites to be one of the best Belgian Black Metal bands, and I never saw why. Never even bothered to really check them out, which of course could explain why I never saw why in the first place. Up until this CD that is.
I had heard many good things about this CD, from both an Aardschok review, and from Lycanthrope, and figured that since I had money to spend anyway I might as well check this one out. I bought it after having heard only one and a half song. (The first song being an accoustic intro with clear vocals... and a melody line which later returns again in On Golden Fields (De Leeuwen Dansen)).
On this CD Ancient Rites presents us with very mature Black Metal, and you can easily hear the band has been going for well over a decade. The keyboards are rather dominant, as are the more melodic pieces and clean vocals (if only in the chorus... or more). This doesn't mean that all aggression has vanished though. Blast beats are still found in abundance, it's just that the CD is a lot more balanced.
The entire CD is good, but there are some definite highlights to be found on the CD. ...And the horns called for war will soon have you yelling along to it, as well Lindisfarme (anno 793). Viking raids on the Christians have always been a rather popular topic, but I think that this rather famous hit hasn't had a song dedicated to it that often...
(Ode to ancient) Europa is a great song as well, starting with a good guitar-solo, and the hook of the song; the line "I still hear the ancient warcry". The melody lines in this song are great, as are the changes in the song. Supreme reigns On Golden Fields (De Leeuwen Dansen), though. With lyrics partially in Dutch it really stands out. Dealing with the battle which still lives in most Belgian minds (though it took place in 1307), the music lives up to the grand idea behind it.
I have just a few more points to make before drawing to a close in this here review... one would be the production. Is it good. Yes, rather. Could it have been better? Yes, rather. The production is powerful, well balanced and clear, but has one problem. The drums sound artificial, and could have been a lot more impressive, as what it played on them is definitely good enough. The last point is the looks of this beautiful digipack. I've been lucky enough to obtain the limited edition digipack, and they really went through a great deal of effort to make it look stunning. With its relief it resembles a book, and the booklet inside is looking great as well. Though I have to say that at times the lyrics and accompanying explanatory notes (thank you!) are difficult to read. This sort of attention deserves a few extra points. Don't fear though, even if you get the 'normal' version, the music is still more than worth it.

Sleepless Magazine (Belgium)

Ancient Rites is somehow Belgium's only band I guess (next to Agathocles maybe) who have a worldwide reputation and are part of the metal scene for already a long time. Over the last 10 years, they progressed from a pure Black Metal act to a Metal band with more and more melodic and bombastic influences. As everybody knows, they started to experiment with keyboards carefully on Fatherland with a good result. This must have made them self-confident as on their new album, these orchestral and bombastic touches became bigger and bigger. Already from the opener Exile (Litanies De Satan) you can easily hear that the many concerts they played made them much tighter, but also that Ancient Rites still kept their own touches and influences.
Dim Carcosa is actually not that 'difficult' to listen to, but you will have to listen to it a few times before you will really appreciate it as there is always very much going on (like in for example Exile (Litanies De Satan) or Northsea) and many details to discover. Overall impression of the album is that most of the songs have become faster and that the orchestral and keyboard-parts have become much bigger but got integrated in the music and the songs really well. Another positive mark is that the band still have a very own sound. I mean, I can't come up with any band that sounds like them. Highlights are to my humble opinion And The Horns (Called For War) (you're really in the middle of a battle-field there) and Götterdämmerung (a great track to bang your head to, this one will do it excellent played live!), but actually all the songs are on a high level. Dim Carcosa got recorded and produced in the Spacelab studio in Germany under supervision of the same team who were responsible for Fatherland, the production is much better this time though. You can hear this especially when you hear the drums which sound much more 'real' and not that cold and clinical as on Fatherland. Also the lyrical concept is once again quite intrigueing and deals with many historical topics, the beloved subject of vocalist / bass-player Gunther. Dim Carcosa is a very good follow-up to the highly acclaimed Fatherland album and will hopefully take the band to a higher level, they really deserve it after all the hard work! Check out the interview for more details...

Whiplash Rock Magazine (Czech Republic)

Již sedmnáctileté belgické puvodne trio, dnes kvinteto Ancient Rites si na scéne excentrického rocku dávno tvrde vydobylo postavení kultu a když píši tvrde, myslím tím tvrde. Nejruznejšími osudovými peripetiemi zmítaná kapela se vždy dokázala nad své problémy povznést, ustát je a nepríznivému osudu se postavit skvelým albem. Do soucasnosti byly sice "toliko" ctyri, avšak každé z nich bylo co do kvality zážitkem a událostí. U novinky to platí merou prinejmenším dvojnásobnou.
Jak je v tomto prípade zvykem, opet pozmenená sestava, tedy zpívající basista Gunther Theys, bubeník Walter Van Cortenberg (zakládající osazenstvo skvadry), kytaristé Erik Sprooten a Jan "Örkki" Yrlund a klávesista Domingo Smets, prispechala s veru mocným materiálem, který do nebývalé zámožnosti rozpracovává odkaz predchozího opusu Fatherland a který vypovídá o skutecnosti, že téhle družine zacínala být klasicko black metalová košile príliš tesná, nebot nám jaksi narostla v ramenou. V rychlých, melodických kytarových brejcích a místy v peveckém projevu (jenž je jinak dosti rozsochatý) jsou tihle Belgicané samosebou treskute verni cernému kovu, nicméne prekvapením muže být hojné zakomponování riffu klasického heavy metalu, v rozmerech rozmáchlosti a atmosféricna se pohybující plochy klávesových nástroju, sborové vokály (príkladne v úhlavní North Sea), vrstevnaté symfonizující figurace a ornamentika, ci dle mého vlastního cítení zámerne rozostrená výsledná zvuková podoba..
To vše ciní z onoho neštepitelne semknutého produktu záležitost nebývale barvitou, zhudebnený epos oslavující barbarsko-válecnickou divokost a v textech opevující zhruba tisíc let starou historii. Zmínený sound pak tuhle muziku zcela lišácky vydeluje z oblasti, v níž se ješte nedávno pohybovali Dimmu Borgir a ješte stále pohybují Cradle Of Filth.

Fatherland

Terrorizer (UK)

It is perhaps fitting that the first song on this, the third album from Ancient Rites is entitled Mother Europe. For this Belgian band, a going concern since 1990, have long been recognised as one of a select, indeed élite, group of Black Metal bands who helped break the Nordic strangehold that was threatening to suffocate the genre sirca 1993-4. "Oh remember the proud Hellenic civilisation" - the first line, too, becomes equally appropriate when the similarities between Ancient Rites and their Greek comrades in Rotting Christ are detected and noted. For both bands were among the first to work out how to combine harshness and melody while still obeying BM strictures, and both have, sadly, remained somewhat underrated ever since.
Cross fingers, in Ancient Rites' case, underrated they will be no more. For Fatherland is exactly the sort of records we want to wax lyrical about here at Terrorizer. In common with Iced Earth, or Cradle Of Filth for that matter, Ancient Rites have a seemingly genetic predisposition towards the old classics. The guitars are simply ALL OVER these songs, not just essaying the Black Metal style which AR helped repopularise but also grinding out Metallica- and Maiden- infused riffs and tuneage with reverence as well as reinventiveness. On the title track in particular, they build bridges from the symphonic beginnings of the song to the rousing, riff-laden finale with a snippet of what can only be Metallica's Orion, new guitarist Jan 'Örkki' Yrlund shifting gears and thus the whole song into a whole 'nother solar system of excellence. That's not the only rabbit Ancient Rites pull out of their magic hat on this album: the orchestration is phenomenal, carefully wreathed around the dense metallic core as if to create a deeply mournful kind of burial-chamber music. Whether fastpaced or more measured in their metre, the eight songs and two intros/outros consistently impress and secude.
But if you're striving to hit the spot, you need to ensure that every piece of the package contributes to the Gesamtwerk and creates more than a whole. With one exception -the choice of typeface used for the tracklist - this is exactly what has been achieved. Longtime admirers will know that the chance of Gunther Theys writing shit lyrics is so small as to be nonexistent, and the sheaf collated here more than bear out his reputation as one of the most intelligent songwriters in Metal today. The opening duo of 'Mother Europe' and 'Fatherland' manage to create near-universals out of the particulars of those not so very large places called homelands, drawing the sting of any accusations of nationalist sentiments with a poetry and grace that many a more crudely patriotic Scandinavian act could well learn from. With the poignant homage to those warriors in history who have fought to the last man knowing that they would not survive, Aris, sandwiched in between, the tone is firmly set for the rest of the album. As steeped in ancient and medieval history as he so obviously is in the traditions of Metal, Theys gets it right in ways which, say, Satyricon could only dream of. Finally, the almost Kittelsen-like cover painting of a woodcutter hewing at a tree sets just the right mood for the words and music inside.
Whether it's Black, True, Old or New Metal to which you pledge allegiance, you'll find something in Fatherland which will please or strartle you. Seems like a bout of homelandsickness is very much in order, then.

Mindview (Belgium)

Our Belgian Ancient Rites got involved with some line-up changes after the release of their previous disc Blasfemia Eternal. Veterans Gunther Theys and Walter Van Cortenberg are today accompagnied by two talented guitarists Erik Sprooten and Jan Yrlund. For a while they also had a keyboardplayer in the band. All this had influence on the Ancient-Rites sound; again it can be called progressive and original... Where Blasfemia Eternal was all about harshness, the melodic side of the bands pops up on Fatherland.
Bombastic synths, impassionating solo's and fantastic acoustical pieces are floating on the surface. Because of the superb playing of Finnish (!) Jan Yrlund they remind me a bit of Finnish Sentenced in the age of North From Here and Amok. (hu?!!-bdc) Songs worth most mentioning are the insane opener Mother Europe, Dying In A Moment Of Splendour (incl. the outro of the debut) and the cleaned up The Seducer of their Dark Ritual demo. On this last one even Mikka Luttinen from Impaled Nazerene sings along. The lyrics are another story; Gunther Theys processes his immense historical and cultural knowledge again in different languages. Take it from undersigned that Ancient Rites in the form of this Fatherland delivered a beautiful visiting card. Only a few actual harder metal bands -even Scandinavian ones- shall ever reach this level and...I'm not a chauvinist!

Aardschok (The Netherlands)

After a long absence the pride of Flanders (and now also Holland) is back with the successor of the in 1996 released Blasfemia Eternal. Guitarist Bart has left the band and is replaced by the Dutch Erik Sprooten (ex-Inquisitor) and the Finn Jan Yrlund (ex-Prestige en Lacrimosa), who make Ancient Rites an international ensemble. That suits the lyrical concept of Fatherland very well, which is based upon the history of the European Continent. Vocalist, bassist and textwriter Gunther Theys writes about things such old heathen traditions, the Roman Empire and the French Revolution. The lyrics are very interesting and give evidence of much intelligence of knowledge. The same goes certainly also for the music, which puts a lot of other actual black metalbands in the shadow. On their previous releases Ancient Rites showed us already their predilection for thrash metal and folk, and those influences can also be found on a larger extent on Fatherland. Apart from that, you can also hear some genuine heavy metal influences from now and then, for instance in the guitarsolos and the beginning of Mother Europe. The ten songs contain a lot of variation and are, certainly at first hearing, quite complicated. Still they are, also thanks to the refrains, very recognizable. Beside the lyrics and the music also the production is way beyond the average, which makes Fatherland, in my opinion, already CD of the year.

Metal Hammer (Greece)

The well-known to the Greek fans Ancient Rites return to the spotlight with their new, third album Fatherland. Like in their previous releases, Ancient Rites have these medieval/folk elements which fit perfectly both with the dark feeling and the musical being of the compositions. We can point out the beautiful and tight guitar themes, the extreme/unearthly vocals, and the "flexibility" of the songs so that the listener don't think that he listens to one song from the beginning of the album till the end, a phenomenon that has become a common one in black metal (and not only). The production is fairly good, the use of keyboards is harmonized with the spirit of the compositions, without any exaggerations, but the sound of the drums doesn't stick to me that much. The riffs are bombastic and bring to mind the great school of thrash of the past decade. This is Fatherland, an album that won't leave any fan of the extreme sound disappointed.

Rifraf (Belgium)

The titel of Ancient Rites' third full length does not contain any fascist references to blood and soil, but points out to a certain nostalgic connection who everybody, black or white, feels with their 'Heimat'. Fatherland is the first album without guitarist Bart who used to be responsible for most of the songs. Newly recruted are guitarists Eric Sprooten (ex-Inquisitor) and Jan Yrlund, a Finn who carries a gothic-past with him. Instead of trying to copy Bart's specific sound, Gunther & co chose for a somehow new approach. But do not worry, old fans still find enough of the old Ancient Rites to get warmed up. Tracks like Mother Europe, Rise And Fall (Anno Satana) walk like usual on authenthic black metal paths. With The Seducer Ancient Rites even relives the very old Fallen Angel. The vocal cooperation between Mika (Impaled Nazarene) and Gunther on this track is a perfect bull's eye. Still, Fatherland is a lot more diverse than all the other material of the band. The keyboards got more prominent and in the guitarplaying of Jan and Eric there was more place for melody. Traditional heavy metal pops up quite often as well in the riffs as in the soli. Seen the roots of the members are in the 80's, this is not surprising. On this disc, Gunther also experiments quite more with his voice than on the two previous releases. The titlesong and Dying In A Moment Of Splendour are two good exemples of these developments. Ancient Rites already used to have a special status in the black metal circuit, well now they fortified this status by the new dimensions which are cultivated on Fatherland!
